Well I’m a fan of these style of dual-use items. Does one NEED a firepit? No, they’re for enjoying a cool evening with friends. Does one need a fire pit to cook on? Yes, if the power / gas are out absolutely! I have a gas cooktop but having a fire pit for food, just in case, is always handy and plan B.Of course this is portable so it can be taken to the beach/camping/whatever but it’s about a B to C rate for that job, but more in a moment. So it arrives inside the carrying case. The case is large and stitched OK, the handles could be a bit tougher but they’ll carry the weight under normal workload. Each stainless steel (SS) part is wrapped in bubble wrap. Well, unless one is careful and saves each piece then inevitably they’ll be lost. Once they’re lost there’s no provision for the stainless pieces rubbing against each other. Hey manufacturer-Nylon coated cardboard would be a better separator and longer-lasting.So these are smokeless as well, which means that there’s plenty of airflow to prevent lower-temp fire to be smoky. They accomplish this through double-walled with cutouts on one wall so that air flows throughout the fire-bottom, sides, and top all allow air flow. This is fine, it’s a standardized design but there’s a drawback. Ashes never burn perfectly cleanly and tend to blow wherever the air flows which is another drawback. Ashes inevitably get inside the double wall, which means if you’re transporting it home it will smell like the same fire that you just cooked. You could wash on the inside and let it dry but the realism of moving this back and forth has drawbacks like that smell or the ash leaking into the back of the suv/car/truck/camper van.So, while moving this has it’s drawbacks, this is great as a fixed fire pit and cook top. You can still add an additional grill on top of the hexagonal grill on top and it’s a great disaster preparedness option. I would have preferred a tool, or a lip on the edge of the grilling surface to make the removal of the hot grill top easier but you can’t have everything. So if one wants a fixed, with the option of being flexible (with caveats), firepit, then this is a great choice. It’s especially good if you factor in the bang for the buck.
